Abstract: The Newcomb–Benford law is used as a method to analyze the results of various studies. This paper presents the use of this method in the field of seismic engineering. A study of the distribution according to Benford’s law (short name for the dependence) in accelerograms was made and an almost complete compliance was observed. A method for measuring the differences between resultant values and Benford’s law is proposed, which makes it possible to evaluate the differences. The study also contains a comparison of the distribution of leading digits in different types of ground motion records: displacements, velocities and higher derivatives. A comparison was also made between real and artificial accelerograms.
