Abstract: The paper presents several properties of the first digits of powers of numbers. It has been shown that the first digits are generated as a sequence of finite number of strings. Probabilities of occurrence of these strings have been computed for powers of several primes. Properties of the state transition graphs associated with the first digits have been investigated.
